Twenty-three-year-old HR coordinator Shevii Reddy lives at home with her parents in Greenstone. “My family chose to live in Greenstone as it’s a rapidly growing area which accommodates modern living and is suited to all types of lifestyle – from bachelors to newlyweds. The area is well populated with property, retail and lifestyle centres with a low crime rate and minimal amount of noise and air pollution. It was a great choice moving our family to this area.”
Greenstone is a great example of the kind of development springing up all over Joburg, catering to young families that need space as well as an easy commute.
Situated on the East Rand of Gauteng, the suburb is anchored by Greenstone Shopping Centre, is a quick drive to OR Tambo Airport, and is surrounded by slightly more established areas Modderfontein and Edenvale.
Accommodation options are varied and those looking for free-standing homes won’t be disappointed. Townhouse and apartment complexes, however, tend to dominate, offering lock-up-and-go living for singles and couples.
“My favourite thing about the neighbourhood is the safety, pet friendliness and accessibility in goods and services that benefits a well-balanced lifestyle.” Shevii also enjoys the calm the neighbourhood delivers, which is a break from the relentless pace of the city. Weekends are spent at home with my family and little Yorkshire. The peace and quiet allows for sleeping in and relaxation out on the patio, with movie nights and popcorn!”
Playschools and preschools abound in Greenstone and its neighbouring suburbs, which is another indication of the life stage of many residents here.
Candyland promises service excellence but, most importantly, love for your little ones and describe their process as providing the stepping stones to a sound education. Montessori enthusiasts are catered to by Modderfontein Montessori Pre- and Primary Schools and Dunvegan and Elma Park Primary Schools are two other options for school-selecting parents.
Older kids can attend Edenglen High School, Edenvale High School and Radley Private School. Even school leavers have options in the area, with Boston City Campus and Business College, Hydro International College for beauty training, and Oaksfield College for fashion design, sound engineering, marketing and much more.
From a convenience perspective, Greenstone really delivers in retail, transport, recreation and even niche requirements. Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital offers excellent medical care to the area (specialising in orthopaedics and oncology) and the speedy Gautrain can be caught from Rhodesfield or Marlboro stations. As a result of its infancy in terms of development, Greenstone is full of convenience stores and malls which boast every store you can think of due to their modernity – from banks to barbers, cafes to optometrists, and interior decor to jewellery shops.
“One thing anyone in Greenstone should know about the area is that it’s full of fun and exciting activities open to all, day and night, with adventure golf, bowling, cafes, fan clubs, cinemas and so much more. My favourite restaurant is Piccola Rossa based in the Greenvalley Shopping Centre, Stoneridge Drive. The best Italian food and pizza around!”
For young, footloose and fancy-free people like Shevii, Greenstone might not offer the fast-paced, glittering nights out that areas like Melville and Parktown do, but there are plenty of ways to keep entertained.
Shopping and lunch out at the mall is a favourite among friends, especially if it’s topped off with a cocktail at Qba. Saturdays can be spent getting out into nature in neighbouring Modderfontein Reserve with trail runs, picnics and dog-walking.
If you have kids you’re also in luck. Take them for their first haircut at Barber Lou’s which really looks after little ones with their own space in the salon and special cuts. The Fun Company ensures families are kept busy with bowling and arcade games, mini golf, laser tag, trampolines and bumper cars.
If the weather is kind, pop past the Horwood’s Farm Family Market for food, drinks, arts and crafts, or get competitive with friends at digzBeach Volleyball for a morning in the sun.
However you choose to spend your free time, Greenstone is right on the money as an option for young families. With convenience solutions on your doorstep, transport options of all kinds, as well as quick access to main highways, modern and easy to maintain accommodation, and lots of ways to amuse the kids, you’ll want to add Greenstone to your list whether you’re on the property market or simply looking for a different way to spend a Saturday.
