Chef Jason Whitehead, culinary consultant and cookbook author, gives us the inside scoop on some of his favourite spots in Cape Town and his home-suburb of Newlands.
Where do you live? I live in the beautiful leafy suburb of Newlands in Cape Town, which is really quiet and peaceful. It takes me 10 minutes to get to the bustling city centre, yet when I am home it feels like I’m out in the country.
Is there an organisation in your community doing something special? The organisation that I support is called Khulisa, which is run by my good friend, Jesse Laitinen, who works with the homeless community. Streetscapes, part of Khulisa, creates work opportunities for the homeless in several urban organic veggie gardens in and around Cape Town.
Favourite sundowner spot? My favourite sundowner spot would have to be The Leopard Bar at The Twelve Apostles Hotel. The views are unsurpassed and it’s not as chaotic as the Camps Bay beachfront just down the road. They have a great selection of craft beers and gins, and their cocktails are great too.
Best way to spend a Sunday? At home with my loved ones, cooking and eating a traditional Sunday roast, with all the trimmings. If I’m feeling lazy, you’ll find me at Foresters Arms down the road for their Sunday carvery, which is an absolute treat and also good value for money.
Favourite neighbourhood eatery? If I don’t have any meetings on a Monday, I’ll take advantage of Tigers Milk in Claremont’s two for one burger specials. Their mushroom and truffle burger is a real winner. If I really want to tantalise my taste buds, I’ll head down to Myoga at the Vineyard Hotel for dinner, which never fails to impress. If I’m craving something fiery, I head down to Bihari Indian Restaurant which is at the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands for some super tasty (and spicy) curries.
Hidden gem? Just down the road from where I live is a hidden little cocktail bar called Botany. If you didn’t know it was there, you would probably struggle to find it. Downstairs is a great Italian steak house called Patina, which is owned by the same group and does great steaks.
Best Hike/Walk/Cycling trail? I’m fortunate enough to have Newlands Forest as my back yard, and I go for a run in the forest at least 3 times a week. It’s particularly beautiful just after it’s rained, and also a great time to go forage mushrooms.
Favourite Shop? I absolutely love crockery shopping and am always on the lookout for interesting plates to add to my collection – I’ve found some real gems at the Milnerton Flea Market
The best experience in Cape Town? We really are spoilt for choice here in Cape Town. If, like me, you have a passion for cars, then hiring a Cobra from Cape Cobra Hire and driving along the coastal roads is a real treat.
