Nederburg’s assistant red-winemaker Zinaschke Steyn shares her favourite places and hidden gems in the area.
Where do you live? I live in Franschhoek. I love the small-town feel and we have some magnificent nature spots right on our doorstep. Also, it is on average about 2-5 degrees cooler than in Paarl (where I work). So, after a long, hot day of harvest is it nice to come home to a cooler atmosphere.
Is there an organisation in your community doing something special? Yes, definitely! Qhubeka is a Western Cape based bicycle assembly facility and we have a station situated at Nederburg in Paarl. They are a non-profit organisation that moves people forward with the use of bicycles. What I like about the organisation is that it is not a “hand-out”, but a “hand-me-up” concept with their learn-to-earn and work-to-earn programmes. The charity distributes a lot of bicycles to schools in the Kylemore and Drakenstein areas to ensure their aim of having no child without a bike.
Favourite sundowner spot? Any place with my partner whilst the sun is setting is amazing! We love to enjoy a nice glass of bubbly on our “stoep”, looking at the sun set over the Franschhoek mountains.
Favourite neighbourhood eatery? I love the newly-opened Hey Joe Brewery – we enjoy simple food, made well.
Hidden gem? For the best burgers in Franschhoek, definitely go to La Bourgogne Farm (they have some good wines as well). For stunning views and excellent wooded Chardonnay – GlenWood Vineyards (nestled between the mountains on a dirt road, but worth the drive!)
Best Hike/Walk/Cycling trail? We are spoilt for choice in the Franschhoek Valley in terms of hiking, walking and cycling trails. We have the La Motte and Mont Rochelle hiking trails and a friend and I have done the “Cats” path trail recently.
The best experience in Cape Town and Surrounds? Giraffe House in Klapmuts is a lot of fun if you enjoy animals and the outdoors. If you’re looking for something a little bit more adventurous, the red City Sightseeing bus in Cape Town covers a lot of interesting stops all in one day.
What gets you up in the morning/what do you think your purpose is? I love seeing people succeed and do well in life, so I feel that my purpose is to teach and empower people. Especially in our work environment, we work with a lot of students and casuals – I want people to leave better, more informed and more equipped than when they started with our team.
