With so many incredible summer choices available when it comes to delicious sun-kissed wines, it can be hard to choose what to sip on this season. Three of Joburg’s very best sommeliers share their suggestions to keep you sipping pretty.
For a brilliant red…
“The Kaapzicht Skuinsberg Cinsaut is an absolute gem that I discovered last month. Well priced, with light, elegant nuances of blackcurrants, cassis, and violets. The flavours carry through on the palate with a light body, light alcohol, and a low tannin structure. Chill it down and it makes for a great drink next to the pool.”

For a delicious white…
“We should all be proudly South African this summer and drink bucket loads of our amazing Chenin Blanc. South Africa has the largest planting of Chenin Blanc in the world, more than France, the origin of the variety. It was one of the original three grape varieties to arrive in the Cape over 360 years ago. Chenin Blanc is part of South Africa’s heritage and we make outstanding and world-class white wines from the variety in a multitude of styles and price points, perfect for our summer. Some of the ones I suggest you try are the Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc, the Mullineux Granite Swartland Chenin Blanc, and the Cederberg Five Generations Chenin Blanc (the straight Chenin Blanc is equally impressive).”

For a cheeky Rosé…
“Summer has long been associated with the pink craze. While it pays to be serious about finding good Rosé, it’s also important not to be too serious when drinking it. Serve it cold, but not icy – though if you do, it will warm up very soon in the summer heat. Good glasses are pleasant but not essential; tumblers are fine, too. Some of my favourites for this year are the La Couronne Merlot Rose 2017, the Delaire Graff Cabernet Franc Rose 2016, and the Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel 2017.”
