Situated on Cape Town’s most scenic route, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Twelve Apostles mountain range lies one of the Mother City’s most glamourous hotels The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa. On a surprisingly beautiful Thursday afternoon, I got to enjoy one of the hotel’s most popular winter promotions – their Overnight, Dinner and a Movie promotion. The perfect excuse for the Mister and I to get dressed up and enjoy a date night.
As we arrived at the Azure Restaurant, we were welcomed with a glass of bubbles and got to peruse the mouth-watering three-course menu. It was one of the few times that making a decision was an uphill task, as everything sounded amazing.
Azure’s winter menu pays homage to founder and president of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection Beatrice Tollman. Each dish is expertly presented by Chef Christo Pretorius to take diners on a taste-bud adventure. The highlights of the menu for me were the Duck Liver Granola (liver parfait, toasted oats, pickled cranberries, port syrup and apple salad – reminding me of a breakfast with a twist) and the Catch of the Day (which at the time was John Dory with smoked-mussels tempura, creamed fennel, burnt shallots, picked daikon, bok choy and dashi jus).
In the end we both decided to start our culinary journey with the Baby Calamari Risotto (roasted calamari broth, crispy tentacles, cauliflower, pearl barley and sultana puree). The dish was delicious and I loved the different textures – the crispiness of the tentacles, the lightness of the broth and the softness of the cauliflower and pearl barley.
For mains, I decided to try something a little different with the Prawn Stroganoff – a great twist on a classic. Traditionally a creamy, mushroom beef dish (and a favourite of mine) – it is the perfect winter comfort food. This version has prawns instead of beef and was a winner for me.
To end off a fantastic dinner, I highly recommend the crème brúlée. Each bite had a great crunch of caramel with delectable creamy custard. Now that we were full, it was time to head off to our own private cinema in the hotel.
The cinema seats only 16 people and can be rented out for an awesome themed party. Be sure to leave some space, as popcorn, milkshakes or hot chocolate, and candy is served while you sit back and enjoy a flick. Go online to check out the schedule – they show anything from classic oldies, artsy and blockbusters. The rotating movie schedule changes every month and includes three dinner screenings daily, at 17:30, 20:30 and 22:30.
The best part of the evening had to be getting to spend the night in a luxury hotel. The sea-side facing room offers breath-taking views of the Atlantic and one night leaves you rejuvenated. Be warned, you may not want to go back to your old life afterwards.
Overnight, Dinner and Movie is part of The Twelve Apostles’ winter offers, which are exclusive to South African residents and offer great value-for-money.
