Apart from the idyllic views, Durban’s South Coast offers an array of attractions that prove a must see not only for locals but visitors too. Let’s take a look at some of our favourite must-sees in the area.

The Port Shepstone Lighthouse

Standing tall at 8 metres high, this national monument retired it’s duties back in 1905. This doesn’t mean that people stop coming to see its mark. With the prominent black and white checkered patterned paint, this lighthouse is a sight to see. The story behind the landmark is a wonderful cultural experience, all of which can be explored when visiting the monument.

Port Shepstone: Dezzi Raceway

This 2.5km circuit is the only motorsport-approved racetrack in KZN. This state of the art facility promises a fun day out for the entire family. Enjoy two sets of open pits, one lock-up pit, an aeroplane hangar, viewing decks and banks, marshaled towers, hospitality zones, a timing office, briefing room, showers and toilets and a soon to come large entertainment area. So if you’re into a day at the races, this one should be on the top of your list.

Ramsgate: Butterfly Valley

Who doesn’t love butterflies? Butterfly Valley is open 7 days a week, 9am-4pm weekdays and on Sundays 10am – 3pm. Specialized in South African butterfly species, Butterfly World offers insight into native butterflies. Take a stroll through the breeding centre, where you’ll learn the lifecycle of each species and if you’re lucky, you might even see one emerging from the pupae! The flight dome lets you interact with the various species of butterflies and even allows you to take some excellent photos for the family album. Be sure to keep an eye out for some bearded dragons, spiders and beautiful bugs!

Margate: Kart Freaks

Take some time out and have some outdoor fun with the family at a day at Kart Freaks. This makes for a great outing, as it’s the perfect solution for an inexpensive day out with fun for the whole family. If you’re not into racing, enjoy a cappuccino and a snack at the coffee shop while overlooking those on the track. With a play area for the smaller children, there’s something for everyone at Kart Freaks.
