Nothing says Cape Town like a lazy summer night spent listening to live music… Or a freezing winter night huddled around a drink and soaking up some live tunes. Here are our favourite music venues in the Cape Town CBD.

The Waiting Room, Long St
A hidden secret of sorts, The Waiting Room is found above Royale Eatery, Long Street’s favourite burger joint. If you’re looking for live bands and acoustic performances, this is the most intimate and delightful place to watch them. There’s a little dance floor and lots of comfortable chairs and couches to sit back, relax, and soak up the good vibes.

Music Venue 01

The Crypt Jazz Restaurant, Wale St
Live jazz every Tuesday to Saturday, with dinner on the side. Tuesdays are a weekly jam session, and Wednesdays to Saturdays have a different jazz ensemble every night. With a R100 cover charge, no corkage and a delicious menu, this unique venue in St George’s Cathedral is a must-visit.

Alexander Bar and Café, Strand St
A classy theatre and live music space, Alexander Bar Upstairs lets real music fans experience eclectic performances up close and personal (the space only seats 40 people). Live jazz on Tuesdays, new folk on Wednesdays and all kinds of performances the rest of the week make it an exciting space no matter the day.

Villain’s Ale House, Hout St
Mark your diary for Wednesday from 6.30pm for live music at Villain’s Ale. Josh Grierson is the muso on hand at this Tarantino-styled bar, and with Happy Hour specials added into the mix, it’s sure to be a good time.

Music Venue 02

Aces n Spades, Hout St
This self-proclaimed dive bar has mastered the seedy-chic look and has a live music line-up that speaks to their clientele – with electronica on Wednesdays, live bands on Thursdays and rock n roll DJs on the weekends.

Weinhaus + Biergarten, Bree St
The former &Union venue now hosts live unplugged sessions every Tuesday and Wednesday evening, at this beer garden bar that offers some of Cape Town’s most delicious craft beers and gourmet pub meals… Come early to make sure you get a seat!
